Summary: The ritual of the Day of Atonement taught the people of Israel how to come into the presence of God. It atoned for the defilement of the sanctuary and for the sins of the people. The Day of Atonement pointed forward in important ways to the ultimate atonement achieved by Jesus on behalf of his people.
